Homecoming review – Julia Roberts' old-fashioned mystery ...

The first season of Amazon's Homecoming was a stylish pastiche of '70s conspiracy thriller elements. The writing is spare, the directing bland, but at least there's pleasure in watching the actors. The whole series is an exercise in taking the potentially significant and rendering it incidental.

It was, in the end, a somewhat briefly told tale about two people working together to overcome the tragic fact that they were stuck in a system they couldn’t overcome.Played by Hong Chau, Audrey appeared to be a receptionist at Geist, the shady corporation behind the Homecoming protocol, but in a mid-credits scene, she somehow has the juice to turn Bobby Cannavale’s evil exec Colin into the fall guy for the whole project, and rubs some strange red chemical onto her wrists. And look out for a remarkable long tracking shot that begins on the exterior and somehow brings us in via a large fish tank mounted in a wall..

Worse, she was doing it on the third-best streaming platform in a landscape so cluttered that only a tiny percentage of shows can achieve any sort of meaningful cultural impact.Homecoming moves along reasonably fast and the last couple episodes, especially the finale, find some momentum that the start of the season lacks — especially if you're trying to remember where the first season ended and what the creators expect you to still care about.Monáe is an interesting non-replacement, a performer of both tremendous presence and deceptive stillness, which works well as her character's disorientation increases.

The key example of this so far has been “Big Little Lies,” a show that made a crystalline one-season-long case for the power of collaboration and friendship, then fractured its central group in season 2 simply for conflict’s sake.

Review: ‘Homecoming’ Season 2 misuses Janelle Monáe and ...

It’s stagy, it hinges on misdirection.Played by Hong Chau, Audrey appeared to be a receptionist at Geist, the shady corporation behind the Homecoming protocol, but in a mid-credits scene, she somehow has the juice to turn Bobby Cannavale’s evil exec Colin into the fall guy for the whole project, and rubs some strange red chemical onto her wrists.Perhaps it’s part of a larger ploy, but there’s not enough subtlety in the writing or performances to make her meekness feel like an intriguing layer of subterfuge.

This is a very satisfyingly structured series indeed. There was a charge there that dwarfed the show’s visual excesses; all the directorial vim existed in service to its story.Still, it’s frustrating to watch Audrey, who connived her way to the top, wring her hands like an unsure novice every time she faces the slightest of challenges.

Confusion is central to the twisting plot of “Homecoming” when the psychological thriller returnsto Amazon Prime on Friday, but at least two things are clear through all the gaslighting: Season 1 is much better in hindsight, and Season 2has problems standing on its own.Monáe is an interesting non-replacement, a performer of both tremendous presence and deceptive stillness, which works well as her character's disorientation increases. In terms of character complexity, Audrey is the central figure this season, ultimately the only person I wanted to know more about.

What happened to her, and whether or not she can accurately remember it, is the basis of the drama here. The writing is spare, the directing bland, but at least there's pleasure in watching the actors.By creating an account, you agree to the Privacy Policyand the Terms and Policies, and to receive email from Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango.

'Homecoming' Review | Hollywood Reporter

Newcomers to the series include the company’s eccentric founder, Leonard Geist (Chris Cooper), and the military figure who challenges his business, the bulldozing Francine Bunda (Joan Cusack).(The story certainly doesn’t need more episodes, but some of the characters could have used them.).

In one of Season One’s two timelines, Heidi recalled nothing of what she had done in the other, as counselor to military veteran Walter (Stephan James).Julia Roberts best performance possibly ever.Just as whatever rough narrative edges existed in the first season have been sanded down to something smooth and forgettable, almost all of my favorite formal eccentricities have been discarded in the directing transition from Sam Esmail to Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

The key example of this so far has been “Big Little Lies,” a show that made a crystalline one-season-long case for the power of collaboration and friendship, then fractured its central group in season 2 simply for conflict’s sake.

But people aren’t going to commit to a five-hour series just to watch one specific shot.Don’t worry if you – like me – found Mr Robot to be a bit too on the nose – a bit too Banksy – to enjoy properly; Homecoming makes for a much more interesting watch.Eventually, it was revealed that Heidi was part of a project, Homecoming, designed to erase the memories that cause PTSD and allow soldiers to return to combat.
